The Last Survivors

For the next few days, Danny remained tense. Every time he heard a noise throughout the Academy, every time there was the faintest hint of any tremor or unexpected sound, his mind turned toward the distant laboratory, and he wondered just what Isa was finding inside it. Through it all, his mind also turned toward the distant nation that was under threat from the strange creatures.

What was happening with them? Had the threat spread? He was almost afraid to look through the globe to see, but then again, was it responsible not to?

A full week after the creature had been spawned, Isa came up to his office. A brilliant sun shone through the windows, glowing so brightly that it almost hurt. The entire landscape, mountains and trees and roads, for miles around, were blanketed in a deep snow, such that the sun's light was reflected back and around, and hurt his eyes even inside the office.

As he sat there, working on things and rubbing his eyes every time he got too close to a window, there was a knock on the door, and Isa poked her head inside.

"Hey, Isa." Danny looked up, then went back to filing away some of the papers that the professors had sent him.

"What's up?"

"Well, first, I was wondering when all the new students from the Corps were going to show up?" She asked.

"I'm just wondering how much longer I have while it's only mages running around here?"

"Ahh," Danny turned and picked up a small letter he had received only the day previously. "Three days from now, is when they'll show up. You anticipating any problems?"

"Not big ones, no." She shook her head. "I just know that the Corps students will be a little off-put by being in a magical academy, and might start looking a little harder than we want them to at my laboratory."

"I'll speak to the professors and make sure that the higher-ups know more or less what's going on. They should be able to ward off the lower ones." Danny shrugged.

"Have you made any progress on the creature?"

"So far, no." She shook her head. "I've been doing what I can to analyze it, but the fact of the matter is that I'm rather struggling. The whole thing seems to be made of dark mana, which has made sample collection rather perilous."

"The samples that I have managed to take, which is mostly a few scales, as well as some blood, I don't know. It's really throwing me for a loop. They don't react the way that you would expect."

"Have you found a way to kill it?" Danny asked.

"That's the most important thing."

"Possibly, yes." She nodded. "I need to do some more research first, but I believe I've found a weakness. The slightly more challenging part, is, I think it's getting ready to reproduce."

"Lay eggs or something?" Danny raised an eyebrow.

"Dungeon monsters can't reproduce."

"These aren't ordinary dungeon monsters." Isa leaned forward. "And I just, trust me, Danny. Some species of lizards have the ability to reproduce by themselves if there are no males present.
